Impression Description

I made Bright Red with passion in mind. Passion for the beauty of the traditional Malaysian houses, or the Rumah Kampung. Besides the passion and changing colours from the present to the past, there is also the representation of danger, a warning, or a choice. What will happen to our societies when what we once held dear is gone? But it also can be a very impressive sunset. The changing colours are both subtle and hard. Sharp lines but translucent paint showing colours on top of the other. There is no orange, it’s the interaction between red and yellow. Looking at this impression makes me think and wonder. Lines are printed double as what is old wasn’t perfect as we expect life today.

Details:

Type of art:
Unique (1/1) original hand-pulled layered monotype print

Medium
:
Acrylic paint on paper printed, pressed and hand-pulled from a gel plate.

Sizes:
– Paper size A4, 21 × 29.7 cm (8.3 × 11.7 in).
– Art size 20.3 × 25.4 cm (8 × 10 in).

Paper: 100% cotton, acid-free, hot pressed, 300gsm, sourced from the EU. Hot-pressed paper is smooth to give the print a fine feel.

Authenticity: All art comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Art is signed, titled and dated below the artwork with pencil.

Series: This print is a part of the Nostalgia series, in which time has stopped while the world has moved on. In my imagination the traditional houses feel vintage, lost, or are already in different worlds than ours. Should we let go of the past? Or not yet?

What is a monotype print?

A monotype is a type of print whereby the printmaker starts with a clean plate the paper is pressed on after the image is created, and ends with a clean plate after the paper is pulled from it. It is, therefore, impossible to create the same image twice as opposed to monoprints. With a monoprint, the plate the paper is pressed on has the image permanently created in it using different techniques. Then it is possible to reproduce identical prints in smaller limited editions (or just only one of course).

All the impressions I make are monotypes. The gel plate is clean so I will have to start anew to create the next impression. This ensures you always will have a unique print that nobody else has.

The artist & printmaker

Daniel Arendzen in a hat and glasses holding a yellow gel plate monotype of a traditional Malaysian house, standing inside a Blender render of the same house, with a carved wooden window behind him.
Daniel is standing in the digital version of the house he is holding in his hands.

Daniel Arendzen is the artist and printmaker who makes original works of art using traditional printmaking techniques with a modern twist in which he first recreates traditional houses digitally before transforming them into physical pieces. His primary objective is to (re)connect people with home through traditional architecture from all around the world. His current series are the Malaysian traditional houses.
