3D render by Daniel Arendzen: a traditional Malaysian house with palm trees on a floating rock in space, with a stairway climbing to a second rock with a large tree, against a starry sky.

Where the journey started. An idea, concept, displacing something we hold dear somewhere out of place. In this case, in space. This house is the foundation and used in the monotype prints.

Sepia 3D render by Daniel Arendzen: a lone traditional Malaysian house on stilts standing on cracked asphalt under a dark, cloudy sky, with pale light breaking through the clouds.

How else to displace? Create a feeling of vintage, in which the house is lonely on cracked asphalt on a cloudy day without any life in sight.

Michael Jackson. I was a fan of him as long as I can remember! When the latest movie came out, I created this monotype print. This is the first successful print that will live for generations.

Purple Lake, gel plate monotype by Daniel Arendzen, showing the printed image only: a traditional Malaysian house on stilts in warm orange-red with a green plant beside it, by a purple lake, with two fading palms against a sky of grey-blue, orange and yellow patches, inside a dark edge

The monotypes became more complex with different uses of colours, yet grounded in the digital world it came from.

When I came across the black and white image from Daphne Lee, I was sold. I created this monotype print from an image and imagined the atmosphere of this abandoned house in Kuala Lumpur at night with streetlights that still work.

The House of Bellamy Road, gel plate monotype by Daniel Arendzen: a two-storey house half hidden behind dark trees and green plants, with yellow lines crossing the image, inside a thick black border

I didn’t only want to have 3D artistic choices. The monotype came into the picture and I printed many impressions of one of Malaysia’s flowers. The hibiscus. Bold, red but also green.

The NASA Artemis crew portrayed in pop-art style on a monotype print with the darkside of the moon as background.

The Artemis returned. How else to honour the crew with such a unique print with the astronauts in front of the backside of the moon?

Minimalist, reduction, the crossover from digital art to a monotype print evoking the same emotion. Standing lonely with only its reflection.

Rusty Water, gel plate monotype by Daniel Arendzen, showing the printed image only: a traditional Malaysian house on stilts drawn in black on rusty orange, standing on its own black reflection, with a thin dark horizon line in the distance

Two Houses, gel plate monotype by Daniel Arendzen, showing the printed image only: two traditional Malaysian houses in orange, the nearest one large at the left with a wooden staircase, the second smaller in the distance, with two dark palms, purple hills and a tall grey-blue limestone peak under a pale sky, on pink-purple ground, inside a bold rough black edge

Complexity in different ways. Here the houses stand in an environment with mountains, something to see, a different way of grounding.

Daniel Arendzen is an independent artist and printmaker creating and selling own work, and is available for commissions, commercial production, licensing, editorial work, and other opportunities.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist who combines original digital work of art with traditional printmaking techniques to (re)connect people with ‘home’.
